It’s equally possible that my father’s wife placed this piece of dried heather on a side table, but it still represents him well. A little floral sprig, a remnant of a trip, perhaps, or of a bouquet with a nod to our native Scotland. The sweetness of it, lying there, so purposefully, does a number on me.

My favorite: What A Young Wife Ought to Know. I’m surprised my father didn’t give Chris a copy of this when we married.

My father, in case you couldn’t tell, is an aesthete. Growing up, he was the first man I encountered who was unabashed at declaring his love for flowers and other delicate, beautiful things. It’s fair to say I’m a wee bit like that myself.

This, to me, sums up my father perhaps better than any other picture I took. It’s of the table right next to his leather reading chair and it contains some of the things he treasures most in this world: good books, opera and his two youngest granddaughters.
